VOLKSWAGEN JETTA GLI IS A GOLF GTI MORE SOFT AND WITH LARGER BAGS

The GTI acronym for decades has magically loaded the Golf and Polo lines, either because it has an aesthetic surrounding and full of remarkable details, or by the performance capable of intoxication. With the average hatch next generation switch (and the variant discarded for the Polo in Brazil), it is now the new Jetta that resorts to magical powers. Volkswagen brings for the first time the GLI version, a first grade cousin of the GTI. The mechanics are strictly the same as the mid-engine 2.0 turbo and dual-clutch DSG gearbox and six gears. The price: R $ 145 thousand. Like Golf and Polo GTI, the Jetta GLI is distinctive in the eyes: you can see from afar the approaching sports sedan. The headlights feature two LED guns with automatic control of the beams and daytime running lights that bypass the sets. The signature is another in relation to the versions with engine 1.4 turbo flex. Grille and bumper reinforce the most insinuating look, which is also highlighted by the characteristic red fillet. The rim wheels 18 with wider and lower tires (225/45) leave the red tweezers on display. At the rear, the design again confirms that it is another Jetta. Despite the identical lanterns, the cap carries a simple airfoil and the bumper has an aerodynamic skirt and two showy tips, one on each side. A curious detail is the absence of the name of the sedan. Volkswagen will treat the model (which replaces the old Highline) only with the GLI acronym, seen on the front mudguards and the trunk lid. The formula is exactly the same as the GTI, including in the cabin.

Inside, the GLI once again copies the Golf and features a square base and thicker rimmed steering wheel with anatomical hand grip. Paddle-shifts, which unfortunately were ignored in versions 1.4 TSI – which we criticized since the launch of the current generation, at the end of 2018. The more sporty seats have larger flaps and electric adjustment for the driver, another item restricted to the GLI. Already the jacket is perforated leather with red stitching (it does not have the iconic chess option of the GTI). Moreover, the GLI is almost equal to the rest of the Jetta range. The difference is due to some additional features. The most relevant are the Auto Hold function, which keeps the electronic brake engaged in shortstops, and the Beats brand speakers. The dashboard has the configurable 10-inch screen of the Jetta R-Line (also present in the Polo and Virtus). The eight-inch multimedia with GPS and interfaces Android Auto and CarPlay is also the same. There are two USB ports, and the only option is the sunroof (R $ 4,990) and grey lead paint (R $ 1,500), unpublished in Brazil – so it was chosen as the launching colour. Because it is a different model, Volkswagen could have added extra ventilation outlets and USB inputs for rear seat passengers. After all, the Jetta is a more familiar car. By the way, that’s the tonic behind the wheel. The GLI has the same firepower as the Golf GTI. The 2.0 petrol engine generates 230 hp and a manly torque of 35.7 kgfm already available at 1,500 spins. The dual-clutch gearbox gives an agile rhythm and makes the sedan reach 100 km / h in fast 6.6 seconds – only 2 tenths behind the Golf.

However, the hatch has a different setting. It is firmer and has even more direct direction. The GLI follows the GTI rear suspension recipe, with multiple arms instead of the 1.4 torsion axle. However, the Jetta is softer overall. The steering wheel does not get to be heavy duty outdoor car cover, like in a “prepared” model. In any case, the starting feeling is clearly stronger than in the 250 TSI versions, which is proven by the numbers obtained on the track. The R-Line, for example, needed 8.6 seconds at zero at 100 km / h. The distance between versions 1.4 and 2.0 turbo is more expressive in the resumes and braking. That, of course, because the GLI uses larger four-wheel discs. The classic recovery from 60 km / h to 100 km / h, for example, takes 3.7 seconds on the R-Line and 2.8 seconds on the GLI – almost one second less. Already to stop at 80 km / h, the sports variant needed 24.7 meters, against 25.8 meters of the R-Line. However, if the comparison is with the Golf GTI, the Jetta GLI loses in all measurements, which was somewhat predictable. After all, the sedan has the same MQB platform with 61 kg more. However, the differences were always tenths or centimetres. And with the advantage of precisely having a family-sized trunk: they are 510 liters in the Jetta compared to 338 liters in the Golf. Perhaps this close-quarters performance among the cousins falls to the ground when Volkswagen launches the eighth-generation hatch in the second half. But while the new Golf does not come, the Jetta GLI arrives to be the most modern sporting option and indicated to the dads and moms who like to accelerate. The price of $ 144,990 puts it on the plateau of Passat, a top-class sedan. However, the GLI brings to the Jetta the enchanting aura of the GTI – something turbinate rivals such as Honda Civic and Chevrolet Cruze do not own.

2019 WILL BE THE YEAR OF PIPES, WITH VOLKSWAGEN TAROK, MERCEDES CLASS XE MUCH MORE

The pickup truck segment is currently one of the most targeted on the world market, as sales only grow. In Brazil, the scenario is the same, and after a few 2018 launches, next year there should be a wave of new pickup trucks. At least four models planned for 2019 are unpublished on the streets and for the automakers themselves. Check out seven releases that will hit stores next year.

Mercedes-Benz X-Class

The Mercedes pickup truck is the one that departs most from the trio developed from the Nissan Frontier. The utility has its own front and rear lines, which follow the style of the German brand. The X-Class will also be more refined than Frontier and Renault Alaskan. Prices should start in the range of R $ 180 thousand and exceed R $ 220 thousand in the top of the line. The basic engine will be the 2.3 biturbo of the relatives, but there will be option Power X350d 3.0 V6 turbo of 258 hp.

Renault Alaskan

Exhibited at the Salão de São Paulo, Frontier’s cousin intends to surf in the tradition of Renault among commercial vehicles. But we are doubtful if it will not cannibalize the sales of Nissan, since Alaskan will also have the same 2.5 turbodiesels with powers of 160 hp and 190 hp, and will not count on flex engine, at least for now. Outside, it has a 2.5 petrol option of 160 hp. Who knows Alaskan does not gain this differential in the future?

Mitsubishi L200 Triton

Presented worldwide at the end of this year (2018), the L200 Triton has been restyled, but the new design has become so different that it looks like a new generation. The utility features the same X-shaped front shield as the other Mitsubishi, but with room for boldness like the tapered headlights and the main group of lights that occupy much of the bumper. The 2.4-litre 190-hp turbo-diesel engine remains as it is, which can be good. The arrival in Brazil should occur until the middle of 2019, remembering that the current generation arrived in 2016.

Volkswagen Tarok

The look is still a concept, but the vehicle will hit the streets “very soon.” It was in this way that the president of Volkswagen of Brazil and South America, Pablo di Si, announced Tarok at the Motor Show of 2018. The automaker’s main attraction at the fair, the unprecedented pickup will be launched until the end of 2019 to cope to Fiat Toro, which fights the market almost alone, since the Renault Oroch never appeared. Tarok draws attention to style details. The front was very similar to that of the Tanoak concept pickup and the “coupe-utility” Atlas Cross Sport. It is clear that some elements will change in the production car. The headlights and grille, for example, will not be illuminated by LEDs. Even the rear, which looks ready, will have changes – the lanterns are joined by a black frame as in the T-Cross SUV, but with a bold design. According to VW, Tarok will be able to tow up to 1 tonne and the bucket can be enlarged with the folding back seat and a hatch, unprecedented solution. Other innovations are the USB port and the 110V and 220V sockets in the cargo compartment, plus the use of gas shock absorbers in the back cover, which make its opening and closing smooth. The project cost R $ 10 million and is the first fully designed in Brazil to win the world – yes, the brand will sell Tarok in other markets. As it will be the first truck made on the MQB platform, the back of the architecture was adapted to receive loads. As for the engines, we know that the 1.4 TSI of 150 hp and a new 2.0 TSI of 190 hp are listed. And there will be full wheel drive (4×4), as in the concept.

New Fiat Strada

With production planned for the end of 2019 and launch in early 2020, the new generation of the Fiat Strada is treated by the code-name 281. The external style borrows many elements of Argo, it will be more like his pickup truck than Mobi, a subcompact that serves only as a test mule. It is worth remembering that Linea served as Mule of the Toro. The base mixes elements of the Argo and the current Strada in the rear, especially the Omega-type rigid rear axle suspension, the one with central rebound that allows carrying the load on really bad floors without shaving the set. As Autoesporte had revealed, the pickup will not reach the size of the Toro, but there is a choice of a double cabin with four doors. From Argo also comes the Firefly 1.3 engine of up to 109 hp. And who knows the six-speed automatic transmission in the future?

Average pickup Fiat

The RAM 1500 is forever promised, but the truth is that it has lost space even internally in the Fiat. The reason: the brand already has a project of a new average pickup, which should give rise to the new generation of Dakota and also a model of the Italian .
